THE FEEDING OF EIGHT WEEK OLD DACHSHUND PUPPIES, by Judy Dutson

It is important that young puppies are fed regularly. They need four meals each day from eight weeks of age to at least twelve weeks of age.

THE FOLLOWING DETAILS ARE THE MEALS THEY HAVE BEEN HAVING

BREAKFAST

Warm fresh whole goat's or cow's milk (about half a cupful) with a dessertspoon of Natural BIO yoghurt and about a quarter of a Farley's Rusk or sprinkle of Readybrek. IT IS IMPORTANT NEVER TO WATER COWS/GOATS MILK AS THIS CAN CAUSE DIARRHOEA.

LUNCHTIME

Raw minced beef mixed with wholemeal puppy biscuits. I do not advise any make of mixer meal that contains additives of any kind, there are makes that are pure and I have found that Waitrose sell small wholemeal biscuits that do not contain colourants preservatives or any mysterious numbers in this dog meal,

If you prefer to give cooked food this is all right, but remember a dog's digestion is designed for raw food. But if you want to feed chicken, rabbit or fish these foods must be cooked and all bones carefully removed.

To the lunch give a quarter teaspoon of Cod Liver oil or the trade named Vitapet. Eggs can be given as a change but no more that a total of three in one week.

TEATIME

The same as for lunch,

BEDTIME

A warm milk drink with a small piece of Farley's Rusk/ sprinkle of Readybrek.

FRESH DRINKING WATER SHOULD ALWAYS BE AVAILABLE

Fresh raw beef bones are most beneficial and help with the cutting of teeth and also amuse the puppy and so prevent the chewing of ones personal items and furniture. Other recommended treats include `Pedigree': Jumbone, Milky Bones, Gravy Bones, Puppy Markies, Dentastix etc. Hide chews are good for teeth and amusement.

Ear Drops: Otodex or similar canine eardrops will keep your puppy's ears fresh and clean. 2 drops once a week should be quite sufficient. If the puppy should ever develop a lot of dark coloured and smelly waxy discharge from the ears consult your vet.

Teeth: if you are in a hard water area your puppy's teeth may begin to scale up from the age of six-eight months onwards. The product Logic, available from the vet, is useful for helping soften the scale, although brushing the teeth daily with a dog toothbrush & toothpaste, also obtainable from your vet, is the best method to keep teeth and gums healthy and clean.

Your puppy will have been wormed before leaving us and the details will have been given to you when you collected your puppy.

To housetrain your puppy you will find that it is already newspaper trained and if you place newspaper where you would like your puppy to go the puppy will remember.

Your puppy will want to wet almost every time it wakes from a sleep. So use this as a start when you decide it is time for outside training. The puppy will also pass a motion after a meal, so again use this time for training,

NEVER HIT YOUR PUPPY IF IT WETS OR MAKES A MESS WHERE YOU DO NOT WANT IT TO. IT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND WHY YOU'RE HITTING IT WHEN IT ONLY KNOWS THAT NATURE IS TELLING IT TO WET OR MESS,

Remember a human is deemed to be the most intelligent of all mammals and yet it takes two to three years to even passably toilet train a child and without nappies if would act the same as a puppy.

Your puppy has been bred with care and consideration and has been used to almost every household noise and conditions

If you have any problems whatsoever with your puppy do not hesitate to contact us and we will do all we can to help and assist you, HOWEVER we cannot act as Vets.

We wish you a long and happy time with your baby and we would love to see you and the puppy whenever you are this way.
